Background
The Phoenix Fire Department currently owns approximately 580 chairs that meet the following characteristics:
Individual reclining chair provides staff with adequate rest and recuperation throughout their shifts. Firefighters are exposed to numerous stressors throughout a 24-hour shift. These stressors include heat, cold, physical exertion, fatigue, cumulative trauma disorders, extreme noise, toxic exposures, and thermal insult. Additionally, cancer, sleep deprivation, and mental health are major health and safety issues in the fire service today. Due to the unpredictable nature of when calls and stressors will occur fire fighters must adhere to rest and work cycles throughout their shifts.
Recliners provide seating or secondary sleep accommodations for “move up” crews. Fire crews are routinely moved to other fire houses in order to provide service and minimize response times to an area where a large response to an incident or event may be occurring within the city. This “move up” process is considered part of our standard operating procedures. A determination for “move up” coverage is made by our Dispatch Center and Operational Shift Commanders during these incidents or events which are unpredictable. This type of seating will allow the Fire Department the ability to maintain seating and rest accommodations for any crew or personnel that will need to work within the confines of a fire station.
This seating has become the national standard in fire house seating and is typically found in every firehouse in the country.
Additionally, single twin mattresses and bed frames are provided to ensure appropriate sleeping conditions for the firefighters.
