The project work will include of safeguarding fifty-two (52) mine features including twelve (12) prospect adits, five (5) subsidences, one (1) vent, and thirty-four (34) adits. The project will occur on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Mesa County.
Closure methods will include grates, corrugated steel pipes, backfill, polyurethane foam, bulkhead, and cable nets. Some features will include bat compatible grates or otherwise require bat exclusions prior to backfill or bulkhead. The uranium mine closure Safety, Health and Environmental Action Plan requirements will be applied.
The project area is located in dry, remote locations on public property managed by the U.S.
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Grand Junction Field Office, all sites are on BLM. Some of the closures are foot access only due to their location along cliff lines or lack of access roads.
Numerous closures are hand backfills with limited materials for backfill and will require
Polyurethane Foam (PUF). Equipment traffic will be limited to existing roads and two tracks and will require approval of BLM and PROJECT MANAGER prior to any equipment access. Equipment access will also be limited by the number trips for certain sites. See attached maps defining project area and site locations. Dangerous rock overhangs and fractured rock are located at many of the mine openings.
A helicopter will be required to long line materials in to mine sites. See the approved helicopter vendors listed below. A Landing Zone area will need to be approved by DRMS and the BLM. If there is a conflict and these vendors are not available, an audit will be required. Audits can be processed in two weeks, but we ask for a month if possible. Attached are the Terms and Conditions for helicopter use per the DRUM Cooperative Agreement.
